How do I install Cognito Money?

Download the installer from our Download page, run the .exe file, and follow the installation wizard. The app will be installed to your Program Files folder and a desktop shortcut will be created.

Where is my data stored?

All your financial data is stored locally on your computer in an SQLite database file. By default, it's saved in your user documents folder. You can change this location in Settings and create backups wherever you'd like.

How do I import my bank statements?

Bank imports are available with Standard ($29/year). Go to Transactions → Import Statement. You can upload CSV, Excel (.xlsx), QFX, or OFX files. The system will automatically detect your bank's format from 15+ presets.

Can I use this on multiple computers?

Your license activates on one Windows PC, but here's the good news: once running, anyone on your home WiFi can access Cognito Money from any device—Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android, laptop, anything with a browser. Just visit the network URL shown at startup. Great for couples and families! If you get a new computer, contact support to transfer your license.

Do I need internet access?

The Free tier works 100% offline. Standard subscription requires internet for AI features (chat, receipt scanning, auto-categorization). Your financial data is processed securely through our servers—we never store it.

How does the AI chatbot work?

Standard subscribers get an AI Financial Assistant powered by Gemini 2.5 Flash. Ask questions like "How much did I spend on groceries?" or "Am I on track with my budget?" and get instant, intelligent answers. No API keys needed—it's all included in your subscription.

What's your refund policy?

We offer a 30-day money-back guarantee on all subscriptions. If you're not satisfied for any reason, email us within 30 days and we'll refund your payment. See our Refund Policy for full details.

How do I upgrade from Free?

Click the robot icon in the app or go to Settings → Subscription. Choose Standard, complete payment, and your new features unlock immediately. Your existing data is preserved.

What happens if I cancel?

Your subscription stays active until the end of your billing period. After that, the app reverts to Free tier features. All your data remains on your computer—we never delete or lock your data.

Is my data secure?

Yes. Your data stays on your computer. When using AI features, only the relevant financial context is sent securely for processing—we don't store it on our servers. Optional features include password protection and AES-256 encryption of your database file.
